Photonics Research
Improving scintillator brightness, energy, and temporal resolution is important in virtually all radiation detection applications. RMD is actively involved in photonics research to enhance the entire scintillation light generation, transport, and detection chain. While RMD is vigorously pursuing the development of brighter and faster scintillators, it is also actively developing new techniques that significantly enhance the light collection and detection efficiencies.
One such approach utilizes the properties of nanostructures such as photonic crystals to increase the usable light produced by the scintillator. This approach does not require development of new scintillator materials, but instead dramatically increases the effective brightness, energy resolution, and potentially timing resolution of existing scintillators by modifying the exit surface of the scintillator crystal.
