Test Engineer / Staff Scientist

RMD is looking to fill a Test Engineer/Staff Scientist position in the Imaging Sensors and Applications Group. The objective of the group is to develop, evaluate, and apply new materials for use in Imaging, medical physics, homeland security, and nuclear/high energy physics applications. In this role you will evaluate the performance of novel scintillators or films in a laboratory setting and design and construct prototype detectors. Being a self-motivated, hands-on individual who can work in a minimally supervised environment is essential.
Job Responsibilities
- Design and conduct experiments to evaluate material properties such as gamma-ray spectroscopy, scintillation pulse shape, optical spectroscopy, and other measurements
- Analyze data and document results for other technical staff (presentations and written reports)
- Work closely with engineers, scientists, and technicians to prepare samples and detectors
- Manage and organize material storage and maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
- Utilize radiation gamma-ray and neutron sources to evaluate material/detector properties
- Introduce and implement new evaluation methods
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, physics, or other scientific/engineering discipline
- 1+ years of research or engineering experience via profession, internships, research, and/or extracurricular projects
- 1+ years of programming experience (Python/Matplotlib/Jupyter Notebook/C/C++)
- SolidWorks or other CAD/CAM software, and/or experience with Additive Manufacturing Processes (FDM, SLS, SLA etc.)
- Experience with electronics (oscilloscopes, NIM modules, digitizers)
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) Preferred Skills and Experience
- Previous experience in radiation detection and measurement
- Master’s degree or PhD in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, particle physics, nuclear physics, or related discipline
- Strong mathematics and statistics knowledge base
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Superior organizational and analytical skills
- Proficiency with hardware blueprints/schematics for mechanical and electrical components
- Experience with circuit design for RF and low-noise applications
- Radiation dose safety training
