Team Leader/Senior Scientist – X-ray/Nuclear Imaging and Spectroscopy
Radiation Monitoring Devices, Inc. (RMD, Watertown, MA), provides a dynamic work environment for performing world-class research and development in the fields of radiation detection and imaging, nuclear instrumentation, and non-destructive test equipment. Since its founding in 1974, RMD’s research and development have resulted in breakthrough technologies and products that are utilized in a wide range of scientific fields, from space exploration to particle physics, and from nuclear security and safeguards to clinical diagnoses and environmental research.
This position is in the Imaging Technologies and Applications Group at RMD.
The mission of the Imaging Technologies and Applications Group is to conceive and develop innovative materials and technologies for radiation detection and imaging for demanding applications in healthcare, the sciences, homeland security and defense. Its efforts have resulted in significant advances in novel high-performance scintillators for imaging applications, ultrafast X-ray imaging systems, thermal and fast neutron imaging systems, and automated inspection systems.
To support our expanding imaging instrumentation research and commercialization efforts, RMD is seeking a Team Leader/Senior Scientist with hands-on expertise and a strong background in X-ray/nuclear imaging and spectroscopy. The candidate will be responsible for the design, fabrication and verification of complex imaging systems and nuclear instrumentation. The candidate will actively interact with a team of physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and engineers to design and develop novel imaging systems. The candidate will also be responsible for evaluations of thin films and crystals of advanced scintillation materials using various techniques and contribute toward advancement of the technology.
Responsibilities include:
- The applicant must be self-motivated and willing to work in a dynamic multicultural team with diverse expertise in science and engineering to ensure the timely and effective completion of R&D project obligations.
- Lead imaging technology development via advances in innovative detector design concepts, novel detector designs and implementation, and bringing about advances in imaging technology.
- Write grant proposals, progress reports, publications, and patents in collaboration with the team.
- Design X-ray/neutron imaging systems and implement system hardware and software with minimal supervision.
- Participate in designing, setting up and conducting experiments at RMD and at National Laboratories, using a variety of radiation sources for performance evaluations of sensors and systems. Analyze and compile data into technical presentations and reports, publish scientific papers, and present at scientific conferences.
- Evaluate scintillator films for use in various X-ray/gamma-ray, and neutron imaging modalities according to developed protocols
- Evaluate scintillator crystal performance using nuclear spectroscopic techniques
- Operate various analytical instruments in the lab, including X-ray fluorescence device, spectrophotometers, and scanning electron microscope with EDS
Requirements:
- MS or Ph.D. degree in physics, materials science, or a related engineering discipline.
- Broad knowledge and experience in X-ray/neutron imaging and/or nuclear spectroscopy.
- Good understanding of Physics of imaging, particularly the physics of medical imaging.
- Hands-on laboratory skills and experience in collecting analytical data in various forms and compiling it into graphical form for presentation.
