Staff Scientist – Photonics
RMD’s Advanced Thin Film Technologies Group (ATFT) is seeking a Staff Scientist in Experimental Photonics with substantive experience in the modeling, fabrication and testing of photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The candidate will support innovative research in integration of novel materials with PICs and fabrication of PIC components. The mission of the group is to conceive and develop innovative materials and technology for active and passive photonic materials with demanding applications in healthcare, the sciences, security and defense. The Staff Scientist will be responsible for working in a team environment with scientists and technicians to conceive, conduct and ensure the timely and effective completion of research and development projects.
As an Experimental Photonics Scientist, you will:
- Design and Optimization: Employ computational tools to design and optimize custom PIC components.
- Fabrication: Collaborate with materials scientists to integrate novel materials into PICs and oversee fabrication at commercial foundries.
- Testing and Validation: Conduct rigorous benchtop testing to validate PIC performance.
- Research and Development: Develop independent research projects, present findings, and publish results in a timely manner.
Minimum Required Education/Experience
- D. in a field related to integrated photonics (Physics, Electrical, Material Science etc.)
- Minimum 1 year of experience in building integrated, fiber-optical, and free-space photonic systems.
- Proficiency in physics-based modeling of photonic components using tools like COMSOL, MEEP/MBP, Tidy3D, Ansys Lumerical etc.
- Experience in thin film deposition, characterization, lithography and vacuum technology
Preferred Education/Experience
- Experience with fabless manufacturing of PICs.
- Experience in end-of-the-line testing of PICs.
- Proficiency in scientific programming tools like MATLAB and Python to analyzing light propagation in photonics systems.
