RMD Facilities

RMD's research and production facilities occupy over 30,000 square feet of laboratories and manufacturing space at our facility in Watertown, Massachusetts. This space houses RMD's six research groups which conduct studies in semiconductors, scintillators, laser-optics sensors and instruments; biosensors, nuclear and X-ray sensors, medical imaging technology; electronic circuit and ASIC development; and computer algorithm development.

X-ray and Nuclear Sensor Research

RMD has extensive facilities for the fabrication, testing, and packaging of nuclear detectors, including clean rooms. Device fabrication facilities include high vacuum evaporators with thickness monitoring capabilities and diffusion furnaces. RMD also maintains a chemistry laboratory, silicon wafer diffusion facility, and testing laboratories dedicated to avalanche photodiode fabrication.

For radiation testing, RMD has a wide variety of isotopic radiation sources, as well as nine X-ray generators in three X-ray test facilities, including a 200 square foot X-ray test chamber with three X-ray medical and dental machines.

Materials Science Research

RMD's Materials Science laboratories include facilities for the synthesis, purification and preparation of semiconductor and scintillator crystals. In addition, the lab includes large area thick films, glove boxes, dry boxes, fume hoods and clean rooms. Preparation facilities include more than 20 crystal growth furnaces and multiple tube zone refiners. Six evaporators are available for producing thick films to over 500 cm2 area. Materials and device characterization facilities include optical and infrared microscopes, four point resistivity probes, SEM and optical spectrometers as well as numerous sets of nuclear instrumentation. Available facililities also include various specialized test fixtures and variable temperature test chambers.

Laser Optics and Optical Sensor Research

RMD houses multiple laser and optics laboratories that are all equipped with modern optical, spectroscopic, and electro-optical instruments, including various lasers, monochromators, optical tables and assorted optics.

Major equipment of the optics laboratories includes: UniPhase micro-chip laser, PTI nitrogen laser, PTI dye laser, H59-635 diode laser, 8 W Lexel argon ion laser, Quanta Ray 1J Nd:YAG pulsed laser, PDL-3 dye laser, harmonic generation crystals, 150 mm monochromators, Agilent 54846A (2.5 GHz bandwidth,) infinium oscilloscope, Tektronix TDS 220 digital storage scope, NIM bin with spectroscopy amplifier and high-voltage power supplies, PCA3 multi-channel scaler, assorted optics and electronics, optical benches, and numerous PCs. Measurement instrumentation includes monochrometers, spectrophotometers, an integrating sphere, spectrum analyzers and high speed oscilloscopes. RMD's CCD instrumentation includes four research grade, high sensitivity and high frame rate CCD systems from Photometrics, SMD and Roper Scientific.

Biochemical Sensor Research

RMD has a well-equipped BL-2 biochemical laboratory for bacterial culture, RNA/DNA extraction and surface chemistry. RMD's facilities meet federal, state and local environmental laws related to the proposed work.

Major equipment in our bio labs include biological laminar-flow safety hoods, a Zeiss IM-35 inverted, epifluorescence microscope, gyratory shakers, a liquid nitrogen storage freezer and a duplex cell culture incubator. There is a double door chromatography refrigerator, an autoclave, a Beckman refrigerated centrifuge, a gel electrophoresis station, a computer interfaced uv-vis spectrophotometer, a High Performance Liquid Chromatography station, and a gas chromatograph containing FID and TCD detectors. In addition, the laboratories contain chemical fume hoods together with the necessary equipment for gravimetric and pH measurements.

Instrumentation Development

RMD's instrumentation work involves microprocessor development, software development, custom printed circuit board fabrication, and ASIC development. RMD has a complete machine shop and engineering design facilities, as well as 10,000 square feet of ISO-9001 certified engineering and manufacturing space for the manufacture of instruments sold by RMD and RMD Instruments, LLC. Available equipment includes high-speed storage oscilloscopes, numerous digital oscilloscopes, and extensive optical and nuclear measuring equipment.
